Who is Call Federal?

Call Federal Credit Union was founded on September 23, 1962, with the goal of helping people save and borrow when other options weren’t available. It was started by Richmond-based employees of Philip Morris to serve both middle management and laborers. The credit union’s first board of directors would walk around the Philip Morris manufacturing center, collecting 25 cents from employees to open their accounts and build relationships.

Despite early challenges, including a flood, Call Federal grew strong, reflecting our values of perseverance, teamwork, and community support. After relocating to a stable location provided by Philip Morris, the credit union reached $5 million in assets by 1979 and moved into our own building at 4605 Commerce Rd, where we are still located today.

Over the years, we continued to grow and expand. In 1994, we opened a branch in Hanover County, followed by a Chesterfield branch in 1996. In 2003, we introduced the “credit union mall,” which showed the cooperative spirit of credit unions. More branches opened in Henrico (2008), Hancock Village (2015), Chester (2018), and Staples Mill Rd (2020), bringing us to nine locations today.

The success of Call Federal is also due to strong leadership, starting with Alice S. Pearce in 1964 and President Roger Ball, who served for 37 years. In 2020, John West became our CEO, continuing the tradition of growth and service to our members.

Our Name

In the early 1960s, when the credit union movement was growing, Richmond employees needed a name for their new credit union. They were inspired by the famous “CALL for Philip Morris” slogan and the character “Little Johnny” Roventini, and chose the name “Call Federal Credit Union.” This name reflects our roots and mission to connect with our community, offering financial services that help our members succeed.

From our humble beginning to becoming a trusted financial partner, Call Federal Credit Union continues to focus on providing practical financial solutions, building lasting relationships, and supporting the community we serve.
