What is spoofing?

Spoofing is a type of cyberattack where a fraudster disguises itself as a trusted source in order to deceive individuals or organizations. The goal is typically to gain access to sensitive information, trick the victim into taking certain actions, or manipulate them in some way. Spoofing can occur through various methods, including:
  1. Email Spoofing: The attacker forges the sender’s address to appear as if the email is from a legitimate source, such as a bank or a coworker, in order to steal personal information or spread malware.
  2. Caller ID Spoofing: The attacker changes the information displayed on your phone to make it appear as though the call is from someone you know or a trusted organization, such as your bank, in order to trick you into providing personal or financial details.
  3. Website Spoofing: Fraudulent websites are designed to look like legitimate ones to steal login credentials, payment information, or other sensitive data. These sites often appear identical to real websites, sometimes using similar URLs.

To protect yourself from spoofing, be cautious when receiving unexpected communication, whether via email, phone, or websites. Always verify the identity of the source before taking action or sharing any personal information.
